Hiking
Trails in the Low Tatras wind through verdant valleys and over rocky
peaks. Like the High Tatras,
the trails are well marked with colored blazes. Here are a few suggestions.
- From Donovaly take the yellow trail 5 kilometers (3 miles)
to Kaliste, a village that burned down in World War II.
And is now a cultural monument. The green trail will take you
12 kilometers (7 miles) to a former mining town, Spania Dolina,
with a museum of folk architecture.
- From Jasna you can take
the chair lift to the top of Chopok
(2,024 meters) and follow the path along the ridge to Dumbier,
the highest peak in the range (2,043 meters) or Polana (1,889
meters) on the other side.
- On the southern side, take the chair lift at Srdiecko to the
top of Chopok. After following the path to the top of Dumbier,
follow the criss-cross path Chata M.R.Stefanika (mountains
chalet) to fill an empty stomach with Gulash or bean
soup. Then continue down the green trail back to Srdiecko. The
trail follows a determined stream through dense foliage. The
abundance of forest life invigorates the soul.
- Another good but shorter hike from Tale or Krpacovo
is up the yellow trail to Baba peak which means
witch. It is a quick ascent peaking above the timber line for
a fantastic view of the mighty Low Tatra mountains Chopok and
Dumbier. A brown bear
was actually spotted on this trail attesting to its remoteness.
